Article Abstract:

Princess Diana's divorce lawyer Anthony Julius entered the law after leaving Cambridge with a first class degree in English in 1977, but reveals that he had wanted to teach English at university since the age of 13 or 14. He embarked upon a part-time PhD on the literary anti-semitism of T.S. Eliot at the age of 30 after becoming became a partner in London, England, firm Mischon de Reya. He now combines a few hours' teaching on the undergraduate law and literature course at University College, London, with his job as head of Mischon de Reya's litigation department.

Admission by race under fire

Article Abstract:

The University of California in Berkeley is to consider a proposal to cease student admission on any grounds other than merit. The proposal has been put forward by black member Ward Connerly, who believes that admission on racial grounds is discriminatory and unfair. Only 32% of students at Berkeley are white, with the remainder made up of Asians, blacks, and Spanish-speaking students. The proposal could affect students with physical disabilities, and cultural and economic disadvantages.

The vapourised and the dead

Article Abstract:

Two courses are being offered by American University (Washington, DC) to teach students the history of nuclear warfare. The courses were inspired by peace activist Akiko Naona. The first course covers the history of nuclear war. The second course looks at how American culture has developed since the weapons were developed.
