David Potter, head of computer software concern Psion, came to the UK from South Africa in 1963 to study natural science at Cambridge University, later becoming increasingly interested in the computers he used to solve physics problems. He invested in company stocks to build up enough capital to establish Psion and leave his tenured position at Imperial College. He recruited some of his former students to develop software and believes the company's success is due to his willingness to hire professional people and share equity with them.

The drop-out rate for students studying for degrees full-time in English institutions is 25%, according to data compiled from funding council information and including students transferring to other colleges and universities. The rate is 19% excluding transfers. The data cover the period from 1994 to 1997. The figures vary according to student intake and subject mix, with students with good entry grades less likely to drop out, as are students of medicine.
