Article Abstract:
There is concern in the United Kingdom that many academics do not have permanent posts, and this applies to all those who work at the Royal College of Art. This is not a result of casualization of labor, but because the staff are required to work as professionals outside the academic world. Many high-level practitioners do not wish to be tied down by permanent academic contracts. Plans to change regulations and bring in permanent posts, in line with a possible European Union directive could damage colleges that rely on allowing staff to practise outside academe.
