A dubious dominion of the dons

Article Abstract:

Universities have for many generations been vulnerable to outside pressures. Most recently, universities have been forced to become servants of society, rather than servants of the state, and are being obliged to take into account the dominant features of the demand-led economy, such as flexibility and diversification. The most significant issue within this trend is whether academics can still set an example by behaving in a generous and civilized manner.

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning international aspects of higher education, politics and the environment are discussed. Particular attention is given to ways in which scientific research taking place as part of higher education schemes help reduce environmental damage.
