A dedicated arbiter of credit

Article Abstract:

The validation service of the UK's Open University provides an opportunity for the work done in alternative higher education institutions to be recognised and for established institutions to extend their activities. The Open University Validation Service (OUVS) was set up in 1992. Four years on, over 40 institutions are accredited by the OUVS, nearly half of these being private establishments, including seven theological colleges, the European Business School and the British School of Osteopathy. Within them, a wide range of courses is validated.

Innovation motivation

Article Abstract:

A study looking into new teaching methods in higher education found the introduction of innovative methods were not always supported by students or teachers. Some teachers found they were badly treated by their colleagues when they tried to introduce new ideas. New teaching methods were introduced for many reasons, such as teachers recognizing the old methods were failing or as part of a national policy. All the new methods were aimed at changing the way students' learned. Some 350 people were interviewed for the study over a two year period.

Bright sparks cross the divide

Article Abstract:

A study looking into innovative teaching in British universities has found the attitudes of the people at the head of the university made a difference. Innovation in teaching was found to be prevented by the poor attitudes of others and how teaching was viewed in comparison to research. It was not dependent on whether the universities were old or new establishments. Some 16 universities were involved in the research which took place over a two year period.
