Article Abstract:

The first electronic books (ebooks) will be available in the US by Christmas 1998, as four companies launch or prepare to launch models aimed at different areas of a book market worth an estimated 30 billion pounds sterling/yr. Ebooks provide a significant cost-cutting opportunity for education departments or companies requiring large amounts of technical books. Microsoft announced in Oct. 1998 that it was joining forces with large publishing firms, electronics manufacturers and ebook innovators to develop a set of open technical standards, the Open eBook standard.

Puttnam whizz-kid warning

Article Abstract:

Some observers in the film industry are concerned access to computers has made people technically expert but they are less imaginative. Animator Greg Maguire points out students need to have expertise in traditional art and not only be good at using graphic design tools on the computer. Educationalist and Film Producer Lord Puttnam suggests students have lost the ability to be truly creative although they are much more skillful with technology. Puttnam was speaking at the 1999 Computers in Art and Design Education conference held in Teeside, England.
