A Wellcome home?

UK Environment Secretary John Prescott may approve the 100 million pounds sterling expansion of UK research charity the Wellcome Trust's genome research centre near Cambridge, UK, after the plan was initially rejected by the local council. Prescott's move could set a precedent in the land development decision-making process. Wellcome is likely to benefit from the government's support of the emerging biotechnology industry, its promotion of competitiveness, and its support of clusters of high technology industries around communities such as Cambridge.

Maths failing engineering(need to improve math skills of UK engineering students)

Article Abstract:

UK students beginning degrees in engineering often lack adequate skills in mathematics, and this is linked to the content of pre-university Advanced Level (A-level) examinations. The content of A-level study varies across the UK, and the knowledge of a student with a grade A in the exam is less in 1995 than 10 years previously. There are problems in a number of areas including algebraic manipulation, graphical skills and calculus. There has also been a drop in the number of students studying A-level math.

Monk building for future success

Article Abstract:

Luton University administrators hope that the school's architecture course will receive a Part I recognition from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in July 1996. The RIBA has already expressed positive views about the standards of the work which architecture students have undertaken so far, according to Anthony Monk, processor of architecture at the establishment. He hopes that the course will reflect the extensive changes which are taking place in the profession.
