Article Abstract:
Ann Oakely's novel 'Overheads' focuses on the repressive bureaucracy of administration and teaching in UK universities in the 1990's. The novel focuses on the competition between teaching and research and the under-resourcing of higher education, as well as the university system's lack of accountability. Academics are shown to have become swamped by bureaucratic strategies, with Oakley admitting that her experiences as a college professor have been fictionalised as a form of therapy.
