Article Abstract:
UK universities are forecast to have a funding gap of 5.8 million pounds sterling in 2005 to 2006. Funds can be raised through charging fees to students, but the resources gained may not benefit higher education and may instead replace money withdrawn by the government. The Committee of Vice Chanellors and Principals (CVCP) has noted that the Australian system protects money raised from students by placing it in a trust. it is proposed that students pay a third of tuition fees and use loans for maintenance.

Article Abstract:
The University of Teesside in north-east England has decided to use the heavy industrialisation of its surroundings as a marketing ploy. It is close to Middlesbrough which has a large chemical works. The university also advertised in a magazine which has a large youth readership, and applications have continued to increase. Teesside also attracts many students from the local area, and 40% of the intake are female.

John Lloyd has been appointed head of journalism at Oxford University's new Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. The institute has received GBP 1.75 million in funding from the Reuters Foundation over five years and is affiliated to Green College and the faculty of politics and international relations.
