Three years after apartheid: growth, employment and redistribution?

Article Abstract:

The ANC won an election victory in 1994 but the rate of progress in developing the social and concrete infrastructure of South Africa has been slow because of financial problems on both a regional and national level. New economic strategies are needed to move the economy forward. More flexible financial institutions must be set up, the government must become more efficient and there is an urgent need for programmes which will address the problems of large-scale unemployment, poverty and the socially disadvantaged.

The fiscal and distributional implications of job generation

Article Abstract:

It is argued that there is no firm evidence for the concept that at any one time there is only a single rate of unemployment when inflation is non-accelerating. Government policy can affect levels of employment and a lower rate of unemployment need not lead to higher rates of inflation. A public investment-led strategy for the UK that could create a million jobs is put forward, and the fiscal and distributional implications are considered.
