The dismantling of CONASUPO, a Mexican state trader in agriculture

Article Abstract:

Since its creation in the mid-1960s, the National Company of Popular Subsistence (CONASUPO) played a vital role in the shaping of Mexican agricultural policies, consequently affecting food production, consumption and rural earnings. The decline in the companyEs importance and activities and its ultimate liquidation in the year 1999 against a backdrop of domestic economic reforms, trade liberalisation, and promises made under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO) are analysed. MexicoEs seven most important and most imported crops that CONASUPO dealt with are focused upon, the early role and reforms of the organisation are looked at, and the effects of its breakdown on public support to farmers producing MexicoEs staple foods and the domestic supply and imports of these crops are examined. The political and economic scene in the country that lead to CONASUPOEs demise, and the obstacles in the way of the new administrationEs plans for agricultural and rural growth are discussed.

Globalisation and wages: a tale of two perspectives

Article Abstract:

Two very different views on the reason for the rise in wage inequality in the US since the early 1970s were examined. The two contending perspectives are the labor model and the trade model. These two perspectives have very different views on what empirical data are significant with regards to the elucidation of wage inequality changes. However, it is interesting to note that globalization had only a minor effect on inequality. It is suggested that there are already signs of protectionist activities against globalization.
