Stages of diversification

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the evolution of sectoral concentration in relation to the level of per capita income and in the light of trade theories that predict a monotonic relationship between income and diversification is presented. It is observed that various measures of sectoral concentrations follow a U-shaped pattern across a wide variety of data sources. That is, countries first diversify, in the sense that economic activity is spread more equally across sectors but at later point of time they start specializing again.
