Privatization Administration's portfolio of state enterprises may be the tip of the iceberg

Article Abstract:

Turkey's Privatization Administration (PA) hopes to sell $5 billion worth of state-owned enterprises (SSEs) in 1995 but other govt bodies may offer even more. In mid-Feb the PA had authority to sell 22 SSEs, as well as shares of 34 private firms. Turkey has pursued privatization in fits and starts since 1980, but realized $1.3 billion in sales from 1992 through 1994. The various companies subject to the PA, and affairs in various Turkish industries, are detailed.

Saudis take first steps in privatizing airline

Article Abstract:

Saudi Arabian Airlines Director General Dr Khalid bin Bakr disclosed that the airline has undertaken the first step towards imminent privatization by setting up a new mandate, a new organizational culture and new image for the Saudi flag carrier. He also stated that there was no timetable for the privatization. The proposed privatization of the government-owned airline would serve as an important step in Saudi's attempts to privatize major state-owned entities.

Article Abstract:

Overviews of the informal business, small formal business, and informal housing sectors of Egypt's economy are presented. Almost 40% of the country's urban population lives in informal communities. Study results indicate that informal communities result not just from economic factors, but from intervention by the government in the housing market.
