Political economy of trade reforms, 1965-1994: Latin American style

Article Abstract:

Trade reforms are believed to have vital roles in the economy of Latin American countries. An analysis of six Latin American countries for the period of 1965 to 1994 shows that the trade policy reforms are strongly associated with leadership and institutional settings as evidenced by implementation of new reforms whenever a change in leadership takes place. The strong influence of executive decision in countries such as Colombia, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico has made other political institutions ineffective in terms of drafting trade policy reforms.

Colombian trade policies and the 1996 WTO trade policy review

Article Abstract:

The World Trade Organization's 1996 trade policy review of Colombia shows some noteworthy economic policy changes instituted by the country, notable among which are the separation of trade policy making from exchange rate management, and the country's membership in a number of regional trade agreements. But the Colombian trade policy review failed to quantify a number of 'violations' made by the country, including its move towards a protectionist atttitude in the agricultural sector and the increased use of anti-dumping and safeguard measures.
