Payment heterogeneity, physician practice and access to care
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the causes and effects of healthcare payment heterogeneity reveals that increased payment heterogeneity increases patient segregation. The study suggests that incentive effects of all types will become stronger if practices become more concentrated, that specialized physicians tat have made purchaser-specific investments are vulnerable to opportunism by payers and that resulting segregation can become a measure of quality.
