On the desireability of compatibility wit product selection

Article Abstract:

Research information into the three stage process where two integrated suppliers decide whether to provide compatible system components, and then setting prices is given. Research shows that wit exogenous product characteristics, the achievement of compatibility does not improve social welfare.

Technological Incompatibility, Endogenous switching costs and Lock-In

Article Abstract:

Research into the use of incompatibility between companies to increase consumer switching costs to reduce competition is given. The research shows that with homogenous durables, and small costs of reaching compatibility, endogenous switching costs increase intertemporal price competition.
