The survey details of National Federation of Independent Business on Small Business Economic Trends, which shows down surge in optimism index by 2.4 points lesser than November to 103.7, are presented. The survey also includes details on labor markets, capital spending, inventories, inflation, profits and wages, and credit markets. The monthly wise trends of various issues like earnings, sales, prices; employment, expansion outlook, job openings, etc from 2000 to 2005 are illustrated. The questionnaire used for the survey is also presented.

The expectations of small business owners for real sales volumes and their plans to add to inventories has accounted for much of the index gain with five index components improving, 2 declining and 3 unchanged. The expectation for business conditions fell slightly and also the hiring plans were down while job openings were up and credit conditions improved slightly.

Different trends in employment changes is detailed, based on a survey conducted on select owners of Small and Independent Business by the National Federation of Independent Business. Unavailability of workers with proper skills was the most important problem as reported by 34% of the owners, whereas 72% of them reported shortage of qualified workers.
