The UK market for milk and cream totalled around 3.6 billion pounds sterling in 1995, with milk accounting for almost 95% of this. The market has seen a move away from doorstep deliveries, which accounted for 46% of liquid milk sales value in 1995 vs 56% in 1993. Meanwhile, the market share of multiple grocers rose from 30% to 41%. The market has also seen a move away from full fat milk towards lower fat products, especially semi-skimmed milk. The cream market is growing strongly, boosted by a trend towards fresh products.

The United Kingdom milk industry has 96.3% consumer penetration. A rise in the consumption of soft drinks and other competitor products has impacted milk consumption. Consumers mistakenly perceive milk to less healthy. They drunk on average 1.9 litres per week per capita in 1997. Milk delivery companies charge fifteen pence more per pint of milk than supermarkets.
