There is a link between both high levels of income inequality and an informal sector, and increases in inequality. Tax revenue and social safety nets are affected by the growth of the informal sector, and a risein inequality may mean a reduction in trust.

Research is presented concerning the use of household budget survey data to investigate the inequality of income in Hungary from 1987 to 1996. The substantial increase in income inequality after 1991 is discussed.
