Household production and the excess sensitivity of consumption to current income

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted comparing consumption growth and sensitivity to income changes of the consumers using the quantitative equilibrium model. Results showed that consumers with less income have lower rate of consumption and more time to engage in household production. While increase in income leads to increase in goods consumption and less time for household activities. It was found that permanent-income consumers' consumption rate is directly proportional to the changes in income.

The contribution of employment and hours changes to family income inequality

Article Abstract:

The decrease in earnings in families in the bottom income quintile contributed to a drop in family income between 1973 and 1991. Average family income in this group declined over 10% during that time, and the share of income declined 18%. The decline in earnings was the result of greater wage inequality among employees and a lower employment rate. The amount of hours or weeks spent working appeared to change little, but there was an increase in the inequality in hourly wages.

Article Abstract:

Evidences on the likely success of individual accounts in providing retirement incomes are examined. The hypothetical pensions that workers in five industrialized countries countries could have obtained based on historical data are estimated.
