Fieldwork, economic theory, and research on institutions in developing countries

Article Abstract:

A broad research methodologies and iterative field research in which the collection of data through surveys is combined with detailed observation and conversation to elicit knowledge about economic institutions in developing countries is presented. It is emphasized that the process requires a larger commitment of resources for a given sample size than many alternative approaches to research.

Randomized evaluations of educational program in developing countries: some lessons

Article Abstract:

Recent randomized evaluation of educational programs in developing countries including programs to increase schools participation, to provide educational inputs, and to reform education is reviewed. It is emphasized that, school participation can be increased substantially by inexpensive health programs, by reducing the cost of school to household, or by providing meals.
