Egypt's water supply: demand for pollution control and purification equipment

Article Abstract:

Producers of pollution control and water purification equipment should look to Egypt as a promising market since that country is preparing to spend $3.5 billion in 1992-97 on potable water and wastewater projects. Demand for such equipment is certain to rise as Egypt strives to clean up the Nile, source of over 95% of the country's water. Likely buyers of water pollution control equipment include the government, governorates, public- and private-sector companies, industry, tourist facilities and consumers. Water purification systems will probably mostly be used for treating industrial effluents.

The Egyptian market for printing and graphics equipment is performing strongly, generating $374 million in import sales in 1996 and expected to reach $387 million in 1997. The demand for equipment, such as offset printing machinery, flexographic presses, rotogravure presses and plotters, is high, with an increase of 35% in average annual growth for 1998, 1999 and 2000. Egypt's success can be attributed to open-tender purchases, availability of credit purchases and negotiations with low bidders for better terms.
