Duration of unemployment in Spain: relative effects of unemployment benefit and family characteristics

Article Abstract:

The impact of unemployment benefits and family characteristics on unemployment duration in Spain was investigated. Using hazard models, two alternative solutions to end unemployment, exits into employment and exits from the labor market, were evaluated. The results, which highlighted significant differences between men and women, show the role of family situations and family connections as important factors behind unemployment duration in the country.

Short- and long-term unemployment: a parametric model with time-varying effects

Article Abstract:

A mixture distribution model for the analysis of unemployment duration was developed. The model, which is an extension of a previous bioscience model, involves a decomposition of the aggregate hazard function into several hazard functions to enable different covariate and coefficient sets for each function. A comparison of its results with those obtained via the Cox proportional hazards model and the parametric hazards model is also discussed.

Regional earnings and unemployment: a simultaneous approach

Article Abstract:

The relationship between the housing market, earnings and unemployment at a regional level is investigated. A simultaneous, two-equation framework is devised to determine explicitly regional unemployment and earnings differentials. Results show that increase in regional unemployment tends to lower wages. Regional housing costs are found to have a positive relationship to earnings and have no apparent effect on the labor market.
