Discussion: the economics of professional etiquette

Article Abstract:

One way to relate economics to etiquette is to view etiquette as a means of enforcing efficient behavior. An example of this view is the letter of reference. It should only be used to sponsor a candidate highly qualified for a position. A second view of professional etiquette is as a means of choosing between multiple but equal options. Choosing appropriate language in writing a letter of reference is an example of this approach.
