Changing comparative advantage and the changing composition of Asian exports

Article Abstract:

The comparative advantage of newly industrializing countries, such as Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and China, have changed during the last three decades due to corresponding changes in factor endowments and structural transformation. The changes significantly influenced the exports of their manufacturing sectors to change from natural resource-intensive products to technology and knowledge-oriented products. Four members of the Association of South East Asian Nations have reached the factor-driven stage in exporting and are nearing the investment-driven stage while China remains in the factor-driven stage.
