Adjustment to the European single market: inferences from intra-industry trade patterns

Article Abstract:

Some evidence supports the hypothesis that marginal intra-industry trade (IIT) (MIIT) is of greater importance to adjustment than so-called static IIT. Moreover, an extensive set of intra-European Union (EU) MIIT indices is assessed for the 1980s. It also seems that the forces for inter-industry adjustment are more vigorous in conventional, diminishing industries, while the expansion of relatively growing industries is inclined to be more equally shared by the EU member states.
