Asea Brown Boveri Inc (ABB) Pres Percy Barnevik's management style is credited with successfully steering the company towards its present position of being the world's leading manufacturer of transformers with annual sales of $29 billion. Barnevik took over as ABB president when the company was formed in 1989 with the merger of Asea of Sweden and Brown Boveri of Switzerland. Barnevik initiated cost-cutting measures and introduced new models, resulting in a increases in sales and earnings by 400% and 800%, respectively.

The factors that led to the historic decision by ICI, Britain's largest manufacturing company, to demerge into two separately quoted businesses are discussed. The conglomerate hopes to spin off its biosciences operations, which include pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, seeds and specialities, while ICI itself will still engage in heavy chemicals, paints and explosives. ICI will implement the demerger by the spring of 1993.
