The French metal container and can industry's turnover dropped from FFr 7.82bn in 1987 to FFr 7.76bn in 1997, with the tonnage shipped by the industry rose from 601,000 tonnes in 1996 to 607,000 tonnes in 1997. This is due in part to the sluggishness of the French market, where shipments dropped around 3%. The rise in imports made up only slightly for the drop in the domestic market. Canned food and drink products are the principal outlets for metal cans and containers, representing 75.8% of applications. Shipments of cans for food rose in 1997, while the index for drink cans rose from 90.5 in 1996 to 105.8 in 1997. The industry's other outlets are industrial chemical products, representing 8%, aerosols representing 6.6%, lids and caps representing 5%, and other non-canned food products, which represents 4%. It is estimated that metal can production will rise 3% in 1998, due mainly to a rise in drink can production and cans for canned food.

The Smoby group has acquired Novembal Flaconnage, the former subsidiary of Nord-Est Emballage, via its MOB Industrie division. Novembal makes a turnover of FFr 35mn for a production capacity of 100mn bottles per year. Novembal produces 50 millilitre to 3-litre bottles and pots in high density polyethylene, low density polyethylene, polypropylene, PPN and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. MOB Industrie produces mainly high density polyethylene, and polypropylene packaging from 250 millilitres to 30 litres. Since 1997, Novembal has gone into injection blow-moulding by extrusion blow-moulding is the most-used technique. This operation offers MOB Industrie new outlets such as cosmetics. The entire division formed by MOB and Novembal will generate a turnover of nearly FFr 140mn with a staff of 127 people in 1998.

Lu has organised a promotional operation, a first name fiesta, for its Pepito line. It is giving away watches, key rings, and cameras as prizes. It has personalised around 10mn wrappings on this line, with a first name, a reference number and the prizes won. Lu has rented ink jet printers and installed them on its production line in order to do this printing. The Domino company was in charge of the equipment rental and installation for this operation.
