According to Beverage Can Makers Europe there were 18bn drink cans sold on the European market in the first half of 2001, up 5% compared with the same period in 2000. The market is driven especially by the beer segment, up 6% and the soft drink segment, up 5%. Aluminium cans, which represent 54% of the market volume, rose 9%, while steel can sales rose only 2%. The drink can market is expected to post a 4% to 5% rise for the full year of 2001, reaching 35.5bn units.

Cebal Aerosols Europe (Pechiney group), the operator of two production plants in the Czech Republic (one in soft packaging, the other dedicated to tubes) is investing into an aluminium aerosol production plant in this country. Located in Velim, near Prague, the plant should be operational by the end of 2001 with a capacity of 150mn units a year. The future unit will be dedicated to the hygiene and beauty markets in Western and Eastern Europe.

The Orangina plant at Blida in Algeria has a pasteurisation tunnel from the French group Emia's new line. This equipment measures 12 metres long and may have one or two levels. The Emia group specialises in the creation and production of equipment for the food industry.
