BELGIUM: UCB BELIEVES IN CELLULOSE

Article Abstract:

After performing acquisitions for two years, UCB has emerged as the largest cellulose packaging film producer in Europe. UCB Films, which invests 4.5% of its turnover into the r&d, wants to develop very specific films. The entity, part of the Belgian chemical group UCB, totals FFr 3bn in turnover (two times higher as two years before thanks to the acquisitions) and a 2,300 staff world-wide. The output capacity totals a yearly 140,000 tons of films including cellulose and OPP for packaging, labels, securitization products and industrial diaphgrams. With a production capacity of 6,000 tons in cellulose (out of an estimated 130,000 tons for the world market), the company believes in a number of key applications (cheese packaging, foil parcels) in cellulose, while this market is going down on overall.

Article Abstract:

The French cheese group Fromageries Bel is proceeding in three stages in order to ensure that its packaging is compliant. The first stage involves following all of the changes in regulation or quality or safety standards, the second consists of asking packaging suppliers for a compliance certificate, (elimination of phtalate in ink and coatings for example) and the last stage consists of verifying the compliance of packaging with the requirements in the specifications sheets, which specify that compliance certificates must be renewed every 18 months. If a new material is used, tests and procedures will be carried out to approve it.
