For asthma sufferers, it is worth avoiding upright models, which have revolving brushes which can cause dust to become airborne. The best models in recent tests were the Hitachi Powerhouse CV-770DP, the Sebo Automatic X1, the AEG Vampyr 7300 and the Miele S310i.
