Article Abstract:

Different bricks are available for different types of building. There are commons, facings, engineering bricks and specials. Frost resistance and soluble salt content should be considered. Jargon is explained and advice is given on how to estimate the number of bricks required and where to buy them. Maintaining brickwork which shows efflorescence, cracking and repointing is described. Bricklaying skills for building a low garden wall are explained. There is advice on choosing a builder. Dulux Weathershield masonry paint was found the best when testing paints for outside walls.

The method of hanging wallcovering is described, with advice on corners, doors and radiators. Steam wallpaper strippers, the Aris Precision Wallpaper Cutter, the Pastemate and the Earlex Autopaster and gloss paints for interior woodwork are evaluated.
