Financial experts suggest reorganisation of family finances to save money. Pension planning and comparison of mortgages is recommended. A retired couple are advised to reassess their tax position and to change to an interest-only mortgage to halve their monthly payments. An inherited lump sum could be used to increase pension contributions, to invest in an instant-access building society account and a TESSA tax free account and to pay off part of the mortgage.

Offshore savings accounts are not tax-free for UK residents, as the interest must be declared on a tax return even though it is not deducted at source. Other myths concerning offshore savings account include the perception that they offer better returns, there is no redress and that only millionaires should have them.
