Cut your house contents costs

Article Abstract:

'New-for-old' policies will replace stolen or badly damaged items with new ones, while 'indemnity' policies deduct wear and tear from the amount being claimed. Insure your property for the full replacement value and regularly re-assess what the replacement costs will be. Shop around for the best policy and if you install security equipment, or are part of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme you may get a discount of between 10% and 20%. Details of 'sum-insured' policies and 'bedroom-rated' policies are given.

Claiming on house insurance

Article Abstract:

One person in five is not satisfied with how house contents insurance claims are handled and nearly one in 20 is dissatisfied with the handling of house buildings claims. Common reasons for payments being less than claims are, in order of frequency, deductions for wear and tear, overestimates, policies not covering certain items, under-insurance and exclusion clauses. Time taken to settle claims, general service, how to make a claim and complaints schemes are also discussed.
