1996-99 Audi A4

Article Abstract:

Audi's 1996-1999 Audi A4 models feature V-6 engines, which are smoother, quieter and more responsive though they are not the most powerful engines in the 'near-luxury' league. Gear changes with the new five-speed automatic transmission are so smooth that they practically set new standards for the entire industry. Downshifts occur promptly for passing. Acceleration is adequate with automatic transmission in the turbocharged Audi A4 versions, but they are best with manual shift functions.

1990-96 BMW 5-Series

Article Abstract:

Acceleration from Bayerische Motoren Werkes' (BMW) 1990-1996 535i models is brisk and passing power is impressive but the automatic transmission is not always responsive, changing gears too soon at times and being slow to downshift for passing. Handling is fluid and responsive, while stopping power is remarkable. Precise steering is accompanies by a sophisticated suspension system. These BMW models are thoughtfully designed and highly capable.

1992-98 BMW 325i/328i/323i

Article Abstract:

Acceleration is swift and smoother at higher engine speeds in Bayerische Motoren Werke's 1992-1998 325i, 328i and 323i models. However, earlier- year models suffered a shortage in low-end power until they revved past 3000 or more rpm. Performance is generally adequate with automatic transmission, but these cars are best enjoyed with the five-speed manual gearbox. Fuel economy averaged 20.4 mpg in a test of a 1992 model with manual shift.
