Article Abstract:
The 1995-1997 Volkswagen Passat models carry a V-6 engine which delivers more than adequate power over a wide range of speeds although it is not as smooth or strong as the engines in a Toyota Camry or Nissan Maxima. Softened suspension and stiffened body structure in this generation improves ride quality. Interiors are exceptionally spacious. Overall, this roomy, sporty, well equipped generation is an interesting and competent alternative to Japanese-brand sedans.

Article Abstract:
Acceleration is swift and smoother at higher engine speeds in Bayerische Motoren Werke's 1992-1998 325i, 328i and 323i models. However, earlier- year models suffered a shortage in low-end power until they revved past 3000 or more rpm. Performance is generally adequate with automatic transmission, but these cars are best enjoyed with the five-speed manual gearbox. Fuel economy averaged 20.4 mpg in a test of a 1992 model with manual shift.
