Compaq Computer Corp of Houston, TX, has purchased four major configuration centers from InaCom Corp of Omaha, NE, in a cash deal valued at $370 million. Compaq, which will also get a call center in Omaha, made the acquisition in an effort to create a unit that will focus primarily on direct marketing. Compaq, which wil also gain over 2,500 employees from InaCom, intends to increase its direct sales in the US from 25% to over 40%.

The campaign is targets the private equity service, which includes venture capital investments and leveraged buyouts, at brokers and invetsment advisers who, in turn, offer it to their customers. The campaign uses a cover letter and a poster with the image of an escalator delivering people to the summit of what appears to be an unconquerable mountain.
