Article Abstract:
Yahoo Inc. of Santa Clara, CA, is set to acquire online-store hosting company, Viaweb of Cambridge, MA, in a stock exchange deal valued at $49 million. Three reasons have been cited for Viaweb's acquisition, namely alternative revenue, access to a large number of small- to medium-size businesses and improved online retail services for consumers. Viaweb's systems enable nontechnical operators to develop, access and update online stores through an ordinary browser. The company claims over 1,000 mostly small- to medium-size business tenants, including cataloger Hanover and gourmet food store Dean and DeLuca. All of the company's 21 employees have reportedly been offered positions at Yahoo's headquarters.
