DoubleClick Inc has denied accusations made by privacy advocates in USA Today that it has violated consumer privacy. A story ran by USA Today alleged that DoubleClick had collected consumer names and addresses at partner Web sites and plans to marry consumer clicking behavior with catalog purchasing behavior from Abacus Direct Corp. DoubleClick confirmed that a dozen Web sites are participating in the task but declined to name them over competitive reasons.

DoubleClick Inc has been under attack from several fronts due to potential violation of privacy by tracking users without their previous consent and knowledge. Its deal with Abacus Direct Corp over a database profiling initiative has caused a legal problem which Michigan Attorney General Jennifer Granholm is pursuing by initiating legal proceedings against DoubleClick. The Federal Trade Commission and the New York attorney general's office are also conducting investigations of DoubleClick's database.

The new categories on ValueClick network available for advertisers include sports and recreation, computers and technology, home and family, shopping, women, arts and humanities, entertainment, media, travel, health, news, education and science, business and finance, games and automotive. The move was taken in response to the growing demands of advertisers to get the most out of their marketing budgets by ensuring that their campaigns reach the specific market they are targeting.
