Article Abstract:

Architects Brenda and Robert Vale have designed a community of five totally self-sufficient, underground family homes, which will be built by Nick Martin in the village of Hockerton, Nottinghamshire. Each house is single storey, with total floor plan of 180 sq mt. The houses will be heated through solar gain and the occupants' own body heat, and will therefore require no conventional heating system. Electricity will be generated by wind turbine, and water will be collected from roofs.

Article Abstract:

The Royal Academy of Arts in London, England, is currently holding an exhibition featuring the work of architect Sir Denys Lasdun. His work has been out of favour during recent years, but this exhibition could serve to reverse this opinion. The small exhibition space is dominated by large photographs of his work, and an attempt is made to recreate the atmosphere of a Lasdun building. His career is presented through information displayed in scrapbook fashion.

Hassall Homes has built a two-storey, Victorian-style house with many technological gadgets and low-energy design features as part of a customer research experiment into housebuyers' requirements. Visitors to the house are asked to fill in a questionnaire detailing the features they would like in a new home and how much they would be prepared to pay for them. The company will later add the most popular features to its standard house design.
