The UK government is to change legislation governing the distribution of National Lottery grants, giving priority to projects that benefit activities and people. The new bill states Lottery money should promote health, the environment and education. Large building projects will find funding greatly reduced from the beginning of 1998. New sports facilities and music venues will receive priority funding, with 2.4 billion pounds sterling having been granted by the Sports Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council by 1997.

Operation architecture

Article Abstract:

Lucy Musgrave, a former journalist, has been appointed as the new director of the charity Architecture Foundation, based in London, England. The foundation is housed at the base of the Economist building, with its four staff squeezed into an under-stairs cubby hole. Musgrave says that she is against moving to a larger building because the foundation's leanness means thai it can focus on promoting good design to the public. The foundation has organised over 60 free events focusing on the built environment.
