Telstra, the largest telecom in Australia, is targeting 2,000 European-based companies that are planning to launch or expand in the Asia-Pacific region. Much of the targeted multinationals are based in Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and Sweden. Telstra is offering applications-based business solutions and it also applies a selection of services that can assist customers in increasing their profitability. The company eyes Europe in its international expansion, with 30% aimed at the region. Telstra hopes to become the natural hub for communications between Asia-Pacific and Europe.

Compaq Computer Corp has begun selling personal compters online in France and the UK. The company intends to eventually expand its online business throughout Western Europe between Sep 1999 and early 2000. France and the UK were chosen to be the launchpad for the online effort because the company already had fully functioning call centers in those countries for a year, said Werner Koepf, the company's general manager for Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
