Article Abstract:
Thermoplastics are revolutionizing the roofing industry in the same manner that one-ply roofing technology impacted the industry over two decades ago. The advent of thermoplastics is being aided by the need for more environment-friendly and energy-efficient roofing systems. Federal facilities, for example, are required to reduce their energy consumption by 35% by the year 2010. Thermoplastics have been shown to be capable of meeting the most stringent VOC specifications.

Article Abstract:
Tests conducted on samples of thermoplastic roofing materials, including TPO and PVC, revealed a better performance for PVC. However, this is probably due to the longer history of the material in the roofing trade in the US. The tests, conducted by industry veteran Carl Cash of Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc, included Co-Polymer Alloys, Chlorinated Polyethylene, Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene, Ethylene Interpolymer Alloy, Nitrile Thermoplastic Membrane, Polyvinyl Chloride and Thermoplastic Polyolefin.
