RedEnvelope Gifts Online is testing the possibility of launching its own mail-order catalog by late 2000. The Internet retailer has sent a prospecting test booklet to 650,000 consumers touting 'decidedly different' Valentine's Day gifts such as 'naughty' fortune cookies and edible body paint for couples. The company has realized that it needs an offline presence to increase sales. Chris Akers, RedEnvelope's director of database marketing, said the test booklet is a good way for the company to develop its customer base.
