Providian looks to tap Argentine market with credit card launch

Article Abstract:

Providian Bank, the sixth-largest credit card issuer in the US, has started operations in Argentina in Aug 2000 after one year of testing the market. Argentina represents the second foreign expansion for Providian, the first being the UK which the company entered in 1999. The company will mainly use direct mail for its marketing campaign and partner with local payment centers to establish at least 6,000 payment locations.

Response rates for credit card offers are declining, report shows

Article Abstract:

Consumer response rates for new credit cards have declined to a 10-year low in the 2nd qtr 1999. A study conducted by research firm BAIGlobal Inc of Tarrytown, NY, showed that response rates were 0.6% during the period, down from 0.8% in the 2nd qtr 1998, and 1.6% in 1st qtr 1999. Mail volume also dropped slightly from 956 million in the 2nd qtr 1998 to 817 million in the 2nd qtr 1999.

Canada picks Bank of Montreal MasterCard service

Article Abstract:

The Bank of Montreal's card services division was selected by the Canadian government to supply its Mastercard acquisition card and web-based card reporting and data integration programs to more than 100 federal government departments and agencies.
