A number of regional airports in the UK have been expanding their services and are building new terminals and airport facilities to improve customer services and to reduce costs. Some airport operators have recognized the importance of cutting energy use in their buildings to reduce costs. The buildings have been designed to enable further expansion. They were also built by methods which were not disruptive to the rest of the airport. Both Bristol International Airport and Newcastle International Airport, England, have had new terminals costing 27 million pounds sterling each.

The new 30 million pounds sterling international passenger air terminal at Lille, France, is very striking in its design, which has been undertaken by French architect Denis Sloan. It is extremely modern, and is intended to emphasise the city's position at the centre of Europe's high-speed communications network. It features many unusual angles, with most external walls sloping outwards.

Terminal 2F is the new passenger terminal developed by Aerosports de Paris at Charles de Gaulle Airport. The new building has been designed by Architect Paul Andreu. The terminal was 6% less costly than the last terminal built at the airport. The building has been designed to offer passengers a direct and easy route to their aeroplanes, in a simple and well lit building. It is 150 metres from the aircraft to the terminal building's entrance door. Expansion in terminal facilities can be achieved by adding extra pods. The building is made of glass, concrete and steel.
