There have been few significant changes in lead times in the UK construction industry since the end of 1998. Lead times for steel frames, insitu concrete works and rotary piling have fallen slightly, while lead times for atrium roofs, drylining and joinery have increased. Ductwork contractors are now quoting 12-week delivery periods, while lead times in the mechanical pipework sector are currently at seven weeks. Lead-ins for generators have remained unchanged at 12 weeks.

There were very few changes in lead times in the UK construction materials industry in May 1999. The lead time for brickwork fell by one week to four weeks, while a fall of one week, to 12 weeks, was also seen for general joinery. The lead times for bespoke joinery, structural steelwork and decorations remained unchanged. The only rise in lead time was seen for generators, up by one week to 16. Lead time for generators is likely to continue to rise.

The resurrection of mothballed construction contracts means that enquiries to many large brick contractors are rising steadily, although tender prices remain depressed. The more optimistic housing market also means a rise in enquiry levels, with around 60% of brickwork output used in new housing. In 1996, brick stocks are set to reach over 1 billion units, with deliveries for 1997 forecast to rise by up to 7%.
