Cladding materials are described. Steel holds 80% of the Uk market where it is increasingly used on high quality buildings as well as in industrial and retail applications. Plastic is been less popular but can give unique shapes and can allow flexible designs. Composite cladding materials based on steel, aluminium and glass reinforced plastic are gaining ground in the market despite their higher cost. Aluminium continues to be popular, has a good range of components and is durable.

Plastic roof lights used in metal-built industrial buildings are hazardous and easily defective. Incorrect installment leads to leaks and sealants can become frail. Incorrect fittings hinder thermal movement resulting in cracking, distortion and leaks. Maintenance is difficult because of their fragility. The National Federation of Roofing Contractors has published guidelines on their design and installation. The use of wall lights would be a better solution.

Glass blocks are increasingly popular building materials for external cladding. They are more attractive then faceted glazing systems and offer good heating efficiency. Glass blocks are supplied in three design varieties and cost around four hundred pounds sterling per square meter to purchase. They need to be reinforced on installation. The Bio Science Center in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, features a curving wall with glass block cladding.
