The government is coming under pressure from representatives of the UK's housebuilders to make councils release more land for housing. This follows the publication of a report indicating that the number of households will rise by 4.4 million over the next two decades, a considerably greater rise than had previously been forecast. It is thought that the government is now prepared to initiate a debate about how and where extra homes can be built.

Contractor John Mowlem will face considerable financial difficulties following the loss of its legal battle with insurance agent Eagle Star and architect Phippen Randall and Parkes over the Carlton Gate housing development in London. Mowlem has now agreed to withdraw all claims against the two other parties, and will have to pay all costs. This is believed to be one of the most expensive construction cases to have reached the High Court.
