The 25,740 sq mt headquarters building for Dutch bank ABN-Amro in London, England, is being constructed by a Balfour Beatty Costain joint venture. The project, which began on site in Apr 1996, is now being handed over to fit-out contractor Bovis. The design is particularly noteworthy for the series of external pipes running from top to bottom at 9 mt intervals. These pipes are made up of 9 mt cylinders bored from solid ingots of steel. The cylinders are welded together to form structural columns. It has proved difficult to match the prefabricated connection points between the columns and the curtain walling.

UK construction consulting firm WS Atkins is employing engineers and architects in its office in Bangalore, India, to produce CAD details for projects in the UK. The company has found that there are many computer-literate architects in the city and that drawings can be produced to the highest standards demanded in Europe and the US. WS Atkins is one of a number of construction companies using highly skilled Indian labour at a fraction of the cost of similar labour in western countries.

UK architectural firm BDP has faced many challenges during its work on a new headquarters building for Opel in Russelsheim, near Frankfurt, Germany. The clients have demanded many design changes, and this will considerably add to the original project estimate of 33 million pounds sterling. The scheme is made up of a very large central atrium surrounded by office blocks. A key feature is the two parallel strips of escalators which connect each of the six storeys.
